Starting from May 1, Hunan province has adjusted the price of assisted reproductive medical services, aiming to reduce costs, standardize service items and improve price transparency. After the adjustment, the original 19 assisted reproductive services were integrated and standardized to 12, and the government guided pricing was used for the first time, with an average price reduction of 14.3%.

According to the "Guide for the Establishment of Assisted Reproductive Medical Service Price Project (Trial)" issued by the National Healthcare Security Administration, Hunan Provincial Medical Security Bureau conducted a detailed analysis of the data of public medical institutions in the province in 2022, and formulated a more reasonable price standard through the weighted average floating pricing method. The notice was issued by the Hunan Medical Security Bureau on April 10, announcing that the new price standard will come into effect on May 1, 2024.

In this price adjustment, the price reduction of a number of core items is particularly significant. For example, the price of "egg retrieval" has been reduced from an average of 2,285 yuan to 1,600 yuan, a reduction of 30 percent. The cost of the "embryo transfer" program was also reduced from an average of $2,154 to $1,500, a decrease of 30.4 percent.

The new billing method is more scientific and reasonable. Taking the "tissue/fluid/cell freezing (assisted reproduction)" project as an example, the previous charge was based on a six-month billing cycle, but since most embryo transfers can be completed within two months, it is now charged at 600 yuan per tube (storage time is 2 months), which makes the cost of the patient more reasonable.

The relevant person in charge of the medical price and bidding procurement department of the Hunan Medical Security Bureau pointed out that the implementation of the government guide price not only allows patients to have a clearer understanding of the treatment items and costs, but also lays a solid foundation for the future inclusion of assisted reproductive technology in the scope of medical insurance reimbursement. This price reduction action not only reduces the economic burden of families who wish to have children, but also provides strong support for promoting long-term balanced population development.
