The First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University (referred to as the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University) recently obtained the review and approval of the national assisted reproductive technology expert group, and officially launched the preimplantation embryo genetic diagnosis technology, which is what we usually call the third generation of test-tube baby technology. This development not only represents the comprehensive technical qualification of the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University in the field of reproductive medicine, but also will play a significant role in improving the number and quality of births in Yunnan Province.

The third generation of IVF technology is an advanced medical technology integrating assisted reproduction, prenatal diagnosis and genetic detection. It improves pregnancy success, reduces the likelihood of miscarriage, and prevents the inheritance of genetic diseases by conducting genetic screening before embryo transfer to pick out embryos free of genetic defects. This technique is particularly suitable for the reproductive needs of older women, patients who have experienced repeated miscarriages or implantation failures, and families who are at risk of monogenic or chromosomal diseases.

As a province with a high rate of birth defects, the introduction and application of the third generation of test-tube baby technology has become a key measure to prevent the transmission of genetic diseases at the source and improve the health level of newborns. The leadership of the first affiliated hospital of Kunming Medical University has made it clear that the hospital will spare no effort to support the development of the reproductive genetics department, and improve the professional technical level and service capacity of the department by enhancing the investment of human, material and financial resources, so as to bring higher standards of assisted reproductive technology medical services to patients.

Professor Tang Li, director of the Reproductive Genetics Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, also pointed out that since the approval of the trial operation of the third generation of IVF technology in April 2023, the department has accumulated valuable practical experience. Now, with the approval of the official operation, the department will be able to provide more assistance to families facing fertility difficulties and risk of genetic diseases, helping them realize their dream of having a healthy baby. At present, the department has a full range of assisted reproductive technology capabilities, including but not limited to artificial insemination, test-tube baby technology, immature oocyte maturation culture in vitro, fertility preservation and testicular microsperm extraction.
